Meet the Main Characters!
DownRight Fierce features four main characters, as well as a handful of supporting characters you will learn more about later (though it's possible to meet one of them in the current build, though his proper in-game art isn't implemented yet). All character art featured here was commissioned from Sakura-Rose12.
NISHIKO SHIMOMURA
Nishiko (Far Left above) is being voiced by @julieparkvo. A school bully delinquent who's screwed up one too many times, Nishiko is a bundle of angry chaos who's been sent to a boarding school to be reformed. What will Nishiko learn and how will they adapt to this new setting?
Nishiko is Korean-Japanese, the daughter of (you guessed it!) immigrant parents who have had a difficult time trying to find stability and security in life while raising two kids. Nishiko is easily influenced by their surroundings, but struggles to maintain connections. They're the protagonist of the story. Nishiko is a lesbian, a bit overtly horny/flirtatious at times, and ends up hyper-fixating on certain people, things, or ideas. It's very difficult for them to focus except for whatever has occupied their attention, and their mind wanders off frequently.
(Potential spoilers re: character identity)
Nishiko identifies as a lesbian, and that is always the case. However, she starts off the story using she/her pronouns, and eventually they will transition to identifying as non-binary, using they/them pronouns.
Bonus tidbit: Nishiko's surname is homage to legendary video game composer Yoko Shimomura, who not only has produced soundtracks for frolicking RPG series such as Mario & Luigi and Kingdom Hearts, but was a composer on the grandparent of fighting games, Street Fighter II.
MARISOL VARGAS
Marisol (Center Left above) is being voiced by @CaptainLadyLuck A prodigy who has lived an isolated life, Marisol has inherited a dojo from her infamous mother, as well as some heavy burdens to bear with it. Nishiko seems innately drawn to her... But what dark past is she protecting?
Marisol is Hispanic-Japanese, the daughter of an immigrant from South America who fought long and hard to get to the US, eventually clawing her way through the ranks to become a famous fighter. However, she went MIA some time ago, and Marisol has lived an isolated life. Marisol has been left to manage her mother's dojo in her absence, and it hasn't been easy. She fell behind on school but is too disciplined/stubborn to give up on getting a degree, so even in young adulthood is trying to attain a high school diploma. Between managing her dojo in coordination with the school's help, training what students she has, maintaining the dojo property herself, and finishing her high school education, Marisol has by and large been unable to keep up with modern technology.
(Potential spoilers re: character identity)
At the outset of the story, Marisol hasn't really thought much on it or processed it, due to her loner lifestyle and responsibilities, but she will eventually self-identify as asexual.
KAYLA OKORO
Kayla (Center Right above) is voiced by @shakyradunn. A trolling, mischievous student by day and a ninja (in-training) by night, Kayla is a person whose goofy exterior may be a smokescreen itself, hiding a more cunning layer within...
Kayla is Afro-Japanese, the daughter of two immigrants. Her father married into a ninja mercenary clan of sorts, and she's set on the path to train and contribute to that clan's legacy. But is working within a clan what really what she wants to do with her future...?
(Potential spoilers re: character identity)
At the story's outset, Kayla assumes she is just a typical 'straight hetero' normie who's just...less normie when it comes to her tastes and mannerisms. But she'll discover she's actually demisexual.
SEIKO MITSUDA
Seiko Mitsuda (Far Right above) is being voiced by @EricaChiem. She's Nishiko's ex-girlfriend and the person who knows her the most intimately. Thoughtful, empathetic, timid, but serious, Seiko is intent on seeing Nishiko succeed. But just what are her motivations and goals...?
Seiko is Vietnamese-Japanese, the daughter of immigrants. Her parents managed to work their way into a good enough position to give their daughter a safe and protected upbringing and enrolment at a specialized boarding school, but with that also comes high expectations...Seiko identifies as a lesbian, and used to date Nishiko, coming to understand them better than anyone else. But Nishiko senses that she's holding more close to her chest than she used to, and has become much more assertive and confident than when they used to date.
Unlike the others, Seiko has already figured out her gender identity and sexual orientation fully from the outset, BUT she deserves her colors, too!
Bonus tidbit: Like Nishiko, Seiko's surname is homage to a famous game composer: Yasunori Mitsuda, known for work on many RPG games including Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, and the Xenoblade
